A drone survey firm covering Taunton

Around forty five minutes up the M5, a county town with heavy commercial stock and the most straightforward flying on the northern corridor.

The far end of an easy road

Taunton is roughly forty five minutes from the Exeter base and effectively all of it is motorway, which makes it one of the least demanding long-ish runs on this list. A morning visit here and an afternoon one further south on the same road is a realistic day, and that is the sensible way to plan work for an agent or a facilities team with more than one property on this corridor.

It is also the point at which a firm based in Exeter has to be straight with you. If a building here needs somebody standing in front of it within the hour, an Exeter firm is not the right answer and nor is a promise on a website. What an Exeter base does give you is a real date, travel inside the price, and the same surveyor each time.

A commercial town, and the paperwork that comes with it

Taunton is the county town, with a large commercial and public sector building stock: single-ply and felt flat roofs on offices and retail, extensive estates on all four sides of the town, and continuing major new development. A good share of enquiries here come from facilities managers, managing agents and public sector estates teams, and every one of those has a compliance process behind it.

So the practical test of a firm here is not the flying, it is whether the certificate of insurance, the operator registration and a site specific risk assessment can be produced at quote stage without a fortnight of chasing. That is why this site puts them first. A supplier who cannot produce them before the booking is a supplier who will hold up your own process.

The vale, the hills and the flying conditions

The town sits on the flat floor of the Vale of Taunton Deane, sheltered by the Quantocks, Blackdowns and Brendons, and it is drier than most of Devon. In flying terms that is close to ideal: long sight lines, flat take off ground and fewer lost days than anywhere on the western half of this list.

Two local conditions are worth planning around. The vale is low-lying and holds fog and frost, so a winter morning that looks fine on a forecast can be unflyable in practice, and the surrounding hills produce localised gusting in storms even when the vale itself is calm. Both are reasons to set a date against the actual conditions rather than a diary slot, and both are ordinary rather than obstacles.

Events, crowds and the town's own calendar

The county cricket ground, Vivary Park and the castle grounds all draw crowds at predictable times, and a flight near any of them on the wrong afternoon is a flight that will not happen. The certificate held governs how close an aircraft may operate to people outside your control, so a busy public space is a scheduling question rather than a judgement call on the day.

Booking a town centre property here therefore starts with a look at what else is on, which is a small courtesy that avoids a wasted visit for both sides.

Behind the survey

What Taunton clients are actually buying

CAA registered

Registered with the Civil Aviation Authority as an operator, with an Operator ID and a Flyer ID held. Ask for the numbers and you will get them before the visit.

A2 Certificate of Competency

The pilot holds an A2 CofC, the certificate that allows flying closer to uninvolved people than the default. There is no GVC, and this site says so rather than leaving you to guess.

Insured with Coverdrone

Commercial operations are insured with Coverdrone. If your site or your managing agent needs a certificate on file, it goes over with the quote rather than after the flight.

Two aircraft, one pilot

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a 100 megapixel Hasselblad camera for detail, and a DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced with a 640 by 512 radiometric thermal camera. Sam Hembury flies both himself.
